Bespoke David Linley Furniture Shocks Saleroom

Bespoke items from world-renowned, high-end quality furniture brand LINLEY attracted several competitive private buyers, two of whom found themselves locked in a bidding war for a set of dining chairs.
But what makes pieces from this British brand particularly attractive?
Who is David Linley?
Born David Armstrong Jones, the Second Earl of Snowdon, is known professionally as David Linley. David Linley is best known for his premium British bespoke furniture brand and for being a member of the extended British royal family. Son of Princess Margaret and first cousin to King Charles III, he is also now the Honorary Chairman of Christie's (EMERI).
After designing and making furniture for a number of years in his workshop in Dorking, David Linley started his own business, 'David Linley', offering custom-made furniture in 1985. Since then, the brand has grown and is known worldwide for its impeccable quality, creative design and use of unusual and exotic wood inlays. These unique pieces are sought after and can fetch a handsome price at auction.
LINLEY's flagship store is located in prestigious Belgravia in London, and is very popular among those seeking to elevate their interiors by adorning their homes with carefully crafted, unique pieces painstakingly perfected by adept artisans.
Linley Furniture at Auction
Here at RWB Auctions, we were thrilled to be able to offer six lots of LINLEY furniture in our 7th May Antiques and Interiors sale on behalf of our client.
This collection of exquisite furniture, custom-made by LINLEY, included a dining table, a set of seven dining chairs, a coffee table, a leather desk chair, two side tables and a stilton stand.
Before the sale, Head Auctioneer, Gareth Wasp, had this to say:
"I'm delighted to be selling these pieces of furniture designed and custom-made by David Linley. The exceptional quality of these is clear to see in the way they have been made and structured, offering these at RWB auctions allows our clients to buy such items that rarely come onto the market at a fraction of the retail cost. I’m personally looking forward to selling these on the 7th May".
And what a sale it was. The combined estimates for all pieces was £4400 - £6300 and they outperformed at auction achieving almost £17000.
The star of the show was Lot 453, an unassuming set of seven high-backed dining chairs upholstered in attractive teal. Excitement was felt by all in the saleroom during the live bidding between a telephone bidder and an online bidder, which went way beyond estimate and resulted in a round of applause when the hammer was finally brought down. The chairs were estimated at £500 - £700 and achieved a tremendous hammer price of £9500.
After the sale, Gareth Wasp excitedly commented:
"Naturally, I'm thrilled with the results from our sale on the 7th of May, in particular the David Linley furniture, which has exceeded our expectations and only goes to show that good quality and well-made furniture is still in demand at auctions. We had several interested parties for all of this furniture, including telephone bids".
All in all, the sale was a success; quality speaks for itself.
For prospective buyers on the lookout for more bespoke pieces, we have three more LINLEY lots to be offered in our 4th June Antiques and Interiors Sale.
