A 1st Battalion The Parachute Regiment snare drum, painted with crest above 'Utrinque Paratus' with Falkland Islands 1982 battle honour, along with various other battle honours. H32cm D37cm.

This mid-to-late 20th-century ceremonial snare drum of the 1st Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, is a striking piece of British airborne regimental history. Produced for band and ceremonial use, the drum is decorated with the Regiment's crest, the motto "Utrinque Paratus" ("Ready for Anything"), and battle honours including the Falklands campaign of 1982. Used during parades, military displays, and formal occasions throughout the post-war period, it reflects the proud traditions and distinguished service record of one of the British Army's most renowned airborne units.

The drum (Lot 179) is expected to attract strong interest from military enthusiasts, airborne collectors, museums, and specialist militaria buyers alike when it comes under the hammer in our forthcoming specialist Militaria, Arms and Armour Sale on Wednesday, 27th May.

The Parachute Regiment Beginnings

The Parachute Regiment, famously known as "The Paras," was formed during the Second World War following Prime Minister Winston Churchill's call for the creation of a British airborne force after being impressed by German paratroop successes in the first two years of the war. He wanted a unit capable of carrying out daring raids and rapid assault operations behind enemy lines. The 1st Battalion emerged from these early airborne units and became part of Britain's newly established airborne forces, trained to parachute into hostile territory ahead of conventional troops. Designed as elite shock troops, the Paras were tasked with seizing strategic objectives such as bridges, roads, and defensive positions before holding them against counterattack until reinforcements arrived. During the war, the Regiment earned a formidable reputation for courage and endurance through operations in North Africa, Sicily, France, Arnhem, and the Normandy landings, establishing a legacy that would become one of the most celebrated in British military history.

What Does "Utrinque Paratus" Mean?

The snare drum is decorated with "Utrinque Paratus" which is a Latin phrase that translates as "Ready for anything" and is famously the motto for The Parachute Regiment (Paras) in the British Army
