Wiltshire Regiment Medals Acquired By Athelstan Museum

RWB Auctions was thrilled to offer two local interest military medals at the monthly Antiques and Interiors sale on 2nd July. These medals were consigned by a descendant of the original owner of the long service medal, local man John Clark, and were accompanied by original paperwork and newspaper clippings, giving an insight into his life, a snapshot in time.
Born in 1855 at the Plough Inn in Malmesbury, John Clark's life was steeped in local tradition and national service. The long service medal that went under the hammer this month recognised an extraordinary career of 36 years and 7 days of continuous dedication to the 2nd Volunteer Battalion of the Wiltshire Regiment. Clark served from 28 March 1872 to 2 April 1908, during which time he achieved the rank of Colour Sergeant.
What makes this even more impressive? At the time of his retirement, he was the longest-serving member of the volunteer service and still holds that title today. When the Great War broke out in 1914, Clark, by then in his 60s, didn't hesitate. He rejoined the effort in 1916, once again donning uniform as a Sergeant in the volunteer force, serving faithfully until he was discharged in October 1919.
The long service medal and paraphernalia are accompanied by another medal dated 1862. This Adjutant's Medal from the Malmesbury Corps predates Clark. The Malmesbury Corps were notable for its efforts in the Cape Colony. Together, the two medals tell a story not just of one man, but of the proud lineage of local military service stretching back decades.

Local Medals to be Displayed at Local Museum
Lot 20 was estimated at £80-£120 on the day and achieved a very respectable £260 to a buyer with a vested interest in history. None other than the Athelstan Museum, based in the heart of Malmesbury. Showcasing local history from the Iron Age through to modern times, these medals will be a welcome addition to the museum's collection.
Trustee of the Athelstan Museum, Jonathan Tucker, is thrilled with the museum's latest acquisition:
"The lot was bought with the intention of displaying [in the museum] due to the extent of members of the Clark family still living in Malmesbury."
