What Is Taxidermy?

Taxidermy, the practice of preserving and mounting animal specimens, has a long and fascinating history. Popularised in the Victorian era, it was originally used for scientific study and display, as well as a way for collectors and explorers to document rare species. Over time, it evolved into both a craft and an art form, with practitioners striving to recreate lifelike poses and expressions. Traditional taxidermy focused heavily on realism, often resulting in the classic mounted heads and full-body displays seen in country houses and museums.

Modern taxidermy, however, has seen significant advances in both technique and standards. While realism remains at its core, there is now a stronger focus on anatomical accuracy, ethical sourcing, and high-quality preservation methods. Contemporary pieces like Bella reflect this approach, carefully prepared to achieve a lifelike appearance while also appealing to interior designers and collectors seeking striking, statement pieces.

Can You Sell Taxidermy In The UK?

The short answer is yes, but if you are buying or selling taxidermy, it is important to understand the legal requirements. Taxidermy is subject to strict regulations, particularly regarding protected species and international trade. The rules depend on the specimen's age, origin, and classification, and may require documentation such as proof of purchase, provenance, or certification (for example, under CITES). Some species cannot be sold at all, so it is essential that both buyers and sellers ensure full compliance with current legislation.

Points to consider when looking to sell taxidermy:

Species: Some animals are protected under laws like the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

CITES Regulations:  Certain species (especially endangered ones) require certification to be sold legally.

Proof of Age/Origin:  You may need documentation showing when and how the specimen was acquired.

Pre-1947 Exemption:  Some items worked before 1947 may be sold more freely, but evidence is often required.

Illegal Items:  Specimens from protected species without proper paperwork cannot be sold.
