Who Was George Hammond Steel
George Hammond Steel (1900-1960), was a Sheffield-born British painter and a designer of stained glass. He was a respected and widely exhibited artist during his lifetime. Steel trained at the Sheffield School of Art and continued his studies in Birmingham and London. He went on to exhibit widely, including at the Royal Academy and the Paris Salon, establishing himself as a skilled and experienced British artist.
It was the dramatic harbours and coastal landscapes of Cornwall and other British seaside towns that deeply inspired Steel’s artistic vision. He returned frequently to places like Polperro, St Ives, Mousehole and St Mawes, where the rhythm of the tides, the age-worn fishing boats and the interplay of light and atmosphere provided endless creative fuel for his brush. A stunning theme for his masterpieces.
