This month, we have a small collection of silver jewellery by local Wiltshire maker Graham Watling. The more unusual piece is the agate pendant featured here, but we are also pleased to offer a large amazonite mounted pendant (Lot 83), an abstract chain necklace (Lot 72), a plain bangle (Lot 90) and a hairclip (Lot 146), along with an abstract brooch (Lot 109). These will be going under the hammer on Wednesday, 18th February, as part of our specialist Jewellery, Silver, Watches and Coins sale.

Graham Watling (1930-1996), Gold & Silversmith

Born in North Yorkshire in 1930, Graham Watling's career path was as distinctive as the modernist jewellery he became known for. After serving as a Commando in the Royal Marines, he moved into teaching, rising to become Head of an Arts and Crafts Department. Following 17 years in education, Watling chose to devote himself fully to silversmithing. A graduate of Loughborough University with a BA (Hons) in Silversmithing, he registered his own hallmark at the London Assay Office in 1959, marking the beginning of his professional practice as an independent maker.

While in Wiltshire, Graham developed a strong affection for the historic village of Lacock, which he frequently passed in his daily travels. Hoping to settle there, he and his wife discovered that much of the village was owned by the National Trust. Undeterred, Graham approached the Trust to enquire about establishing a workshop, and after reviewing examples of his work, they offered him premises to rent together with a tied house, on the understanding that he would reside in the village and be available to visitors.

Thus, in 1972, Watling established his workshop and showroom in Lacock, later expanding into larger premises as his reputation grew. Working under the name Watling, he became known for his distinctive modernist style and exhibited widely, including at the Craft Council in London (1971), the Bluecoat Gallery in Liverpool, and at the World Fairs in Montreal (1969) and Tokyo.

The Watling tradition continues today. Graham's children, Jane and John Watling, each hold their own hallmarks and have carried forward the family's commitment to craftsmanship, both continuing to work from studios in Lacock. John and his daughter Ariana now represent the second and third generations of jewellers, working from a contemporary studio at The Tanyard in Lacock. Using tools passed down through the family and skills learned from an early age in Graham's workshop, they proudly uphold a silversmithing heritage rooted in both place and family.
